Kanda Express Onion Shipment Due in Kolkata on 24 September

A train carrying onions from India’s Price Stabilization Fund buffer stock is scheduled to reach Kolkata on 24 September 2026, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs says. It is intended to supplement supplies in the city and nearby districts ahead of the festive season. The arrival is a plan as of 23 September, so shoppers should not assume the consignment has already reached markets.

The government says roughly 1,400 metric tonnes of buffer onions have already been distributed in West Bengal through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation, including mobile van sales at ₹35 a kilogram. The incoming rail consignment would add to that existing distribution, rather than mark the first intervention in the state.

The practical distinction is between a scheduled wholesale supply movement and a guaranteed price at every retail shop. Buffer releases can increase availability in targeted markets, but the price a household sees depends on where and when the stock is sold, local transport, other supplies and retailers’ pricing. The ₹35 figure describes the cited government mobile van sales; it is not a universal ceiling for private sellers.

The central government says it is planning distribution in Kolkata and adjoining districts and is considering additional access through Sufal Bangla. Until specific outlets and timings are announced, buyers should check local official sale points and current prices rather than travel on the assumption that every market will have buffer stock on 24 September.

The shipment is part of a wider rail-and-road release programme that began on 24 August, using the buffer to respond to seasonal price pressure in consuming markets. Its effect on Kolkata’s retail prices will be clearer only after the train arrives, the onions are distributed and market quotations respond. This update will need a further check if the schedule or distribution arrangements change.
