Public-Sector and Rural Banks to Open on Sunday Ahead of Proposed Strike
India’s public-sector banks and regional rural banks are to operate on Sunday, 27 September 2026, according to the Ministry of Finance. The unusual opening is intended to give customers a banking day before a proposed nationwide bank-union strike from 28 to 30 September. The strike is proposed as of the ministry’s 23 September statement; its eventual status could change.
The ministry says the Reserve Bank of India has approved operation of branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on Sunday. This announcement names public-sector banks and regional rural banks. Customers should avoid assuming every private bank branch will follow the same timetable and should check their own branch before travelling.
The calendar explains the intervention. A proposed three-day stoppage immediately after the preceding weekend could create an extended gap in counter services. A Sunday opening may let people complete time-sensitive branch work, but it does not guarantee that a particular service will be available at every branch or that the proposed strike will go ahead unchanged.
Customers with cash, documents or other branch-dependent tasks can confirm local opening hours and service availability through their bank’s official channels. Those who can use digital banking should still watch for bank notices on transaction processing and support during the proposed strike period. The government says it and bank managements have appealed to the unions to defer the action and are arranging continuity of essential banking services.
A useful update will come from a confirmed union decision and branch-level notices closer to 27 September. Until then, the known facts are the Sunday operation announced for the two named bank groups and the proposed 28–30 September strike, not a settled outcome of negotiations.
