What is TikTok’s AI shopping assistant? How it differs from one-click checkout in the For You feed
TikTok’s AI Shopping Assistant is a product-page chat tool that answers questions about items a shopper is considering, including sizing, availability and shipping. TikTok announced it alongside Buy Direct, a separate checkout tool designed to let someone buy from a brand with one click from the For You feed. The distinction matters: an assistant conversation can lead to checkout on a merchant’s website inside TikTok’s browser, while Buy Direct offers a native TikTok checkout. Neither feature is available to every shopper or brand yet.
Announced on October 5, 2026, the tools aim to shorten the distance between seeing a product in TikTok and deciding whether to buy it. TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as a conversational agent that follows a shopper’s questions and keeps their needs in context during the exchange. In its more detailed explanation, the company says a chat window appears on a product page in TikTok’s in-app browser, where answers draw on information supplied by the merchant.
What can TikTok’s Shopping Assistant do?
A shopper looking at an advertised product could ask about its materials, fit, available colors or delivery options instead of leaving the page to search for those details. TikTok says the assistant can provide product information, sizing, shipping and availability guidance and help a shopper move toward a purchase.
That does not mean the AI independently checks every answer or automatically buys an item. TikTok says the product-page answers are based on merchant-provided information. Shoppers should still check the final product details, total price and delivery terms before placing an order.
In the product-page flow TikTok has described, the shopper can proceed to checkout on the merchant’s site without leaving TikTok’s in-app browser. That is different from Buy Direct’s native checkout, even though both experiences keep the shopper within the app.
How does TikTok’s one-click checkout work?
Buy Direct is TikTok’s proposed faster route from a product seen in the For You feed to a purchase from the brand. TikTok says the native checkout uses a shopper’s stored payment method and saved address for a one-click purchase and includes in-app order tracking. The brand remains the merchant of record for the transaction.
“One click” describes the intended checkout experience when those details are already saved and the feature is available for that merchant. It should not be taken to mean that every product in the feed has a buy button or that every shopper can use the tool now. TikTok says Buy Direct requires a merchant integration using the Universal Commerce Protocol, which connects participating commerce systems to the checkout experience.
Can you already buy products directly from TikTok?
Yes. TikTok Shop already lets people discover and buy eligible products through features such as shoppable videos, livestreams and the Shop tab. The newly announced tools do not replace TikTok Shop. Instead, they extend shopping into other parts of the app and offer a direct-brand purchase route through Buy Direct.
For shoppers, the practical difference is where the purchase starts and which checkout handles it. A TikTok Shop listing is part of TikTok’s existing marketplace. Shopping Assistant can answer questions on a merchant product page opened in TikTok’s browser; Buy Direct is designed to complete an eligible brand purchase through TikTok’s native checkout from the feed. Seeing a product in a For You video does not, by itself, establish that it uses either new tool.
Which brands can use the new tools, and when?
TikTok has named Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among the commerce and payment partners helping build the experiences. Those are technology partners, not a list of brands already offering Shopping Assistant to customers. TikTok has not identified a roster of participating consumer brands in its announcement.
Access is limited for now. TikTok says its new shopping tools are available through eligibility-based testing opportunities, with interested advertisers directed to their TikTok sales contacts. It has not announced a date when all shoppers will see the features. Salesforce, an early partner, says a phased rollout of its own integration for the new checkout experiences is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027; that is not a platform-wide launch date.
For someone shopping today, TikTok Shop remains the established way to buy within the app. Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct describe additional paths that may appear as participating brands test them.
