Bruno Fernandes Benched for Manchester United vs Bournemouth After Como Criticism

Bruno Fernandes was named on Manchester United’s bench for Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth, a striking selection by Michael Carrick four days after his captain publicly questioned the team’s tactics following a heavy defeat at Como.

Harry Maguire took the captain’s armband in the starting XI at Old Trafford. Fernandes was available as a substitute, but Carrick chose to begin the match with Youri Tielemans, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba among his midfield options.

The decision comes as United try to end a seven-match winless run in all competitions. Their 4-1 Champions League loss at Como on Wednesday, October 21, intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s team and prompted Fernandes to speak openly about its approach without the ball.

What Fernandes said after Como

Fernandes questioned United’s decision to sit back rather than press Como more aggressively. He said the tactical approach was a choice for the coaching staff and argued that United needed to be braver when under pressure.

His comments put the relationship between United’s captain and head coach in the spotlight before Bournemouth’s visit. Asked on Friday whether he might drop Fernandes or remove him as captain, Carrick did not commit to either course. He said his priority was the team and that he would do what was best for the club.

Carrick also rejected the suggestion that the dressing room was divided. Neither he nor United has confirmed that Sunday’s benching is a disciplinary measure. The timing makes the Como comments central to the discussion, but the starting lineup alone does not establish Carrick’s reason for the decision.

Manchester United’s starting lineup against Bournemouth

United named Senne Lammens in goal, with Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro, Maguire and Ayden Heaven in defence. Santos and Baleba started in midfield, while Amad, Tielemans and Mount lined up behind Bryan Mbeumo. Fernandes was among the substitutes.

Carrick made four changes to the side that started against Como. Fernandes had captained United in Italy before being replaced in the second half; Joshua Zirkzee scored the team’s late consolation goal.

Leaving Fernandes out is a significant call beyond the public disagreement. United must find a way to create chances without their captain in the opening lineup, while Carrick needs a response from a side that has struggled for results. Fernandes’ place on the bench leaves open the possibility that he could still play a part against Bournemouth.

The selection does not settle his longer-term role or the captaincy. For now, the confirmed change is clear: Maguire leads United from the start, and Fernandes must wait for an opportunity as Carrick tries a different lineup at Old Trafford.
