Torrey Pines Reserve Closes for Construction, While State Beach Stays Open

Visitors planning a Torrey Pines hike near San Diego need to separate the state natural reserve from the adjacent state beach. California State Parks closed the reserve to all visitors on 22 September for the next phase of a multiyear construction project, with reopening scheduled for March 2027. Torrey Pines State Beach and its North and South beach parking lots remain open.

The reserve closure covers its trails, the Beach Trail Staircase, the Lodge, the road and both upper parking lots. It applies to pedestrians and cyclists as well as motorists. Work includes new gas, water, wastewater and communication lines, replacement of an old restroom building, and accessible parking and walking connections between the upper lots, Lodge and new restrooms. The agency says the work follows an earlier phase of underground utility upgrades in a sensitive habitat.

The distinction matters when planning a trip: an open beach does not mean access to a reserve trail or the staircase from the cliffs. Beach visitors can use the designated North and South lots, while hikers should choose another open destination instead of treating the closed reserve as a route to the sand. State Parks says there are 28 other state parks within 50 miles. The March reopening is a schedule, not a guarantee; construction updates should be checked before a future visit.
