Flydubai FZ1073: What is known about Indian captain Smit Machchhar and the safe landing
Flydubai flight FZ1073 landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia on September 30, 2026, after an altercation in its cockpit. The airline says on-duty Flydubai crew travelling aboard secured the aircraft, diverted it and landed it. Its Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, was injured. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says another pilot stabbed Machchhar and apparently tried to crash the plane, but Flydubai has not confirmed that account or a motive, and an investigation is continuing.
What has Flydubai confirmed?
The flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the incident occurred. Flydubai has described it as a cockpit altercation and says everyone aboard was safe and accounted for after the landing in Tabuk. The airline has not identified the people involved in its public account, specified a weapon or explained what caused the confrontation.
Its description also makes an important distinction about the landing: Flydubai credits crew members who were travelling on the flight with securing and landing the aircraft. That does not mean Machchhar, who was injured during the incident, flew the final approach. The airline has not publicly set out a complete sequence of who controlled the aircraft at each stage. It sent replacement aircraft to Tabuk for the passengers and crew.
What is being claimed about the captain?
Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and appeared to be trying to bring down the aircraft. He later identified Machchhar as the injured captain and credited him with resisting, opening the cockpit door and enabling passengers and crew to intervene. Netanyahu said another flight crew aboard then entered the cockpit and stabilised the plane. Those details describe his account of the emergency, not findings from a completed investigation.
The distinction matters because the airline has confirmed an altercation and a safe diversion, but says the underlying reasons and motives are still unknown. Reports of a deliberate crash attempt should therefore remain attributed to Netanyahu rather than presented as an established conclusion. The airline has urged against speculation while authorities establish the facts.
How is Machchhar?
Indian officials identified Machchhar as an Indian national and said he received medical attention after the incident. Following a visit to the captain and his family at a hospital in the United Arab Emirates on October 1, the Indian Embassy there said he was recovering well. India’s ambassador, Deepak Mittal, said the captain was in stable condition. That update concerns his recovery; it does not resolve the disputed details of what happened in the cockpit.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar’s courage and wished him a speedy recovery. Netanyahu also praised the captain and those who intervened. Their tributes reflect the seriousness with which they view the incident, but should not be mistaken for an official account of the suspect’s intent or for a final aviation-safety finding.
Flydubai has temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues. For now, the established outcome is that FZ1073 diverted to Tabuk and landed safely, with its passengers accounted for. How the cockpit confrontation began, precisely what each person did during the flight and whether anyone intended to crash the aircraft remain questions for investigators.
