India beat Malaysia 5-1 in Asian Games hockey final, securing direct LA 2028 berth

India beat Malaysia 5-1 in the men’s hockey final at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, October 3, turning a close first half into a decisive win in Kakamigahara, Japan. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice as India retained the gold medal. Because the Asian Games men’s competition is a direct qualifying event for Los Angeles 2028, the victory also secured India’s place in the Olympic hockey tournament.

How India won the final

India took the lead in the 11th minute when Harmanpreet converted a penalty corner. Malaysia’s response was quick: Shello Silverius scored three minutes later to bring the match level at 1-1. The equaliser meant India had to regain control rather than simply protect an early advantage.

Another penalty corner provided the breakthrough. Jugraj Singh scored in the 23rd minute, restoring India’s lead and sending the defending champions into halftime 2-1 ahead. At that stage Malaysia remained within one goal, but it would not score again.

The third quarter gave India a more comfortable margin. A penalty-corner move led to a penalty stroke, which Hardik Singh converted in the 42nd minute for 3-1. Malaysia now needed two goals just to draw level, while India could defend its lead and look for openings as the game stretched.

India settled the result in the final quarter. Shilanand Lakra finished a move from close range in the 54th minute, and Harmanpreet added his second goal three minutes later. The late goals took the score from 3-1 to 5-1 and completed a win built on set-piece opportunities, a converted penalty stroke and a strong finish in open play.

Why the gold medal means an Olympic place

The Los Angeles 2028 qualification system awards one men’s hockey place through the Asian Games to the highest-placed team not already qualified through an earlier route. By winning the final, India claimed that direct Asian berth. It does not need to earn its Olympic place through the separate qualification tournaments scheduled for early 2028.

That distinction matters: winning an Asian Games medal alone does not guarantee Olympic qualification. Malaysia took silver, but its defeat did not give it an automatic LA 2028 place. Its Olympic prospects depend on another qualifying route, including eligibility for the later qualification tournaments.

The berth is a place for India’s men’s team in the 12-team Olympic hockey competition, not a guarantee that the players who contested Saturday’s final will make the eventual LA 2028 squad. Team selection comes later.

A successful title defence

India entered the final after beating Pakistan 4-3 in the semifinal; Malaysia reached it with a 2-1 win over Korea. Saturday’s result gave India a fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold and its first successful defence of the title. The previous gold came at the Hangzhou Asian Games held in 2023.

The men’s result followed another Indian hockey victory: the women’s team beat China 1-0 in its final on Friday, October 2, also taking the Asian Games route to LA 2028. It is the first time India has won both Asian Games hockey gold medals at the same edition. For the men, the immediate outcome is clear: a 5-1 final win over Malaysia delivered both the title and a direct Olympic berth.
