Russian missile strike on Pryluky kills 22 as rescuers search apartment rubble

A Russian missile strike on a residential building in Pryluky, northern Ukraine, has killed 22 people, including five children, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Another 54 people were injured, seven of them children. Rescuers were still clearing rubble on Thursday, October 8, after the building was hit the previous day, so the casualty figures could change.

What happened in Pryluky?

The missile hit an apartment building in Pryluky, a town in the Chernihiv region about 93 miles (150 kilometers) east of Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a cruise missile struck the building directly. The attack took place on Wednesday, October 7, during a broader Russian missile and drone barrage that also hit Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions.

The Pryluky death toll rose as crews worked through the damaged building. Officials had reported 20 deaths by Wednesday evening; the State Emergency Service confirmed 22 by Thursday morning. Those figures refer to the strike in Pryluky, not to all deaths reported across Ukraine during the wider barrage.

What is known about the rescue operation?

Emergency crews worked through the night at the apartment building, searching the wreckage and dismantling damaged sections. They rescued 15 people, including one child, according to the State Emergency Service. The agency reported that the work was continuing on Thursday morning.

The 54 reported injuries are also specific to the Pryluky strike. An injured person is not counted among the 15 rescued simply because they were hurt; the rescue figure describes people crews brought out of the wreckage. Officials have not announced a final casualty total.

Was Pryluky the only place hit?

No. Russia launched missiles and drones at Kyiv and about a dozen other Ukrainian regions in the wider October 7 attack. Deaths and injuries were reported elsewhere, but those reports should not be confused with the updated toll from the apartment building in Pryluky.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its wider strikes targeted facilities connected to Ukraine’s military industry. That account does not change the reported impact on the Pryluky residential building. The immediate focus there remains the people killed and injured and the crews working through the debris.

The latest confirmed Pryluky figures reported on October 8 are 22 dead and 54 injured. Rescue work was continuing when those numbers were released, and any subsequent official update could revise them.
