₹142 Crore Traction Upgrade Approved for Guntur Rail Section
Indian Railways has approved a ₹142 crore upgrade of the electric traction system on the Savalyapuram–Guntur section in Andhra Pradesh. The plan changes the supply arrangement from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV over 73 route kilometres of South Coast Railway, according to the September 19 announcement.
The work covers 146 track kilometres. That larger figure counts track length across the section, while 73 route kilometres measures the corridor itself; the two numbers describe different things. The approval is intended to strengthen the power infrastructure that supports electric trains as traffic grows.
Why traction capacity matters
Rail electrification is more than overhead wires. Power supply equipment has to deliver enough electricity reliably when several trains draw power along a route. A 2×25 kV arrangement is used to support stronger distribution over a corridor, which can help railway planners accommodate future demand. The announcement does not promise an immediate increase in train frequency or a new passenger service.
The section forms part of a longer route linking Vasco, Gadag, Guntakal, Nandyal, Savalyapuram, Guntur and Vijayawada. Its position on that chain makes the capacity of one segment relevant to freight and passenger operations beyond the towns at either end. Benefits will depend on how the upgraded equipment is installed, integrated and maintained with the rest of the network.
For passengers, the distinction between approval and commissioning is practical. Existing timetables do not change simply because a power project has received funding. Construction, testing and any later operating decisions must follow before the system can be judged in service.
The next useful markers are a work schedule, completion and evidence of reliability under actual train loads. The railway has stated the approved cost and coverage; it has not supplied a completion date or a quantified travel-time benefit in this announcement.
