₹252 Crore Kavach 4.0 Approved for Lucknow Rail Division

Indian Railways has approved ₹252 crore to provide Kavach Version 4.0 across 607.7 route kilometres of the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway. Announced on September 19, the work covers identified balance sections of the division and is intended to extend automatic train protection.

Kavach is designed to monitor train movements and intervene in certain unsafe situations. It can help prevent a train passing a signal at danger and apply brakes automatically when required. This approval is a funding and deployment decision, not a statement that all 607.7 kilometres are already protected by an operational Version 4.0 installation.

What the upgrade means

A train protection system adds a technical safeguard to the work of drivers, signallers and maintenance teams. Its value depends on compatible equipment, trackside and onboard deployment, testing, staff training and ongoing upkeep. The announcement does not provide a commissioning date or a list of individual stations and sections, so passengers should not infer a service change on a specific journey yet.

The distinction between route kilometres and train kilometres also matters. The 607.7 figure describes the length of line planned for coverage, not the distance travelled by trains or the number of trains equipped. The approved cost establishes the scale of the work, while actual safety benefits will depend on completed installation and operation.

For a busy rail division, a protective system can reduce one category of risk by responding when operating conditions cross defined limits. It cannot remove every cause of disruption or collision. Signalling discipline, track condition and human procedures remain essential alongside the technology.

The next public milestones are procurement, installation, testing and commissioning across the specified sections. Those will show when the approved investment becomes a working layer of protection for trains in the Lucknow Division.
