Odisha Clears SiCSem Proposal for Silicon Carbide Device Unit
A unit approval committee has cleared SiCSem Private Limited’s proposal to establish a silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing unit at IDCO Infovalley-II in Odisha’s Khordha district. The September 15 approval covers a proposed 21.889-acre site near Jatni under the Falta Special Economic Zone’s jurisdiction.
The announced investment is ₹3,406.25 crore. Plans call for manufacturing silicon carbide diodes and MOSFETs, with proposed annual capacity of 4.8 million diodes and 91.2 million MOSFETs. Officials project around 1,270 jobs and export turnover of ₹7,043 crore over five years. These are project estimates, not employment or sales already realized.
Why this matters
Silicon carbide devices can be useful in power electronics where efficiency and heat performance matter. Building domestic manufacturing capability in this segment could support supply chains for industrial and energy applications, although the specific customers, commissioning schedule and actual yields have not been set out in the approval announcement. A unit approval is one step toward a facility; it does not mean production has begun.
The site is part of Odisha’s attempt to attract higher-value electronics manufacturing. Large projected output figures are useful for judging the scale of the ambition, but a factory must still be built, equipped and qualified before those numbers can be tested. Skilled hiring and the ability to meet customer specifications will matter just as much as headline investment.
The committee’s decision provides a clear status marker for the proposal. The next milestones worth watching are financing and construction progress, installation of manufacturing equipment, hiring and evidence of commercial production. Until then, the job and export figures should be read as official projections attached to the approved plan.
For Odisha, the potential benefit is a new cluster of specialist work and supplier demand in Khordha. Whether it delivers that benefit will depend on execution after approval rather than on the announcement alone.
