₹493 Crore Mukutban–Gadchandur Rail Line Approved for Maharashtra

Indian Railways has approved a 38.21 km new line between Mukutban and Gadchandur in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of ₹493 crore. The September 18 decision is intended to give industrial traffic a shorter route and improve rail access in parts of Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts. Approval is an early project milestone; trains are not yet operating on the new alignment.

Mukutban in Yavatmal and Gadchandur in Chandrapur serve an area with cement plants, coal mines and limestone extraction. Railways expects the proposed connection to link those clusters more directly to the Majri–Nanded route, allowing freight towards Jalna, Parbhani, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and other destinations to avoid some longer journeys. It is also presented as an alternative to the congested Wardha–Manikgarh and Balharshah–Nagpur routes.

The detailed project report estimates 6.08 million tonnes of freight a year and proposes two MEMU passenger trains in each direction per day after commissioning. Those figures are forecasts and plans, not current traffic or an announced timetable. Goods cited in the projection include coal, cement, iron and steel, fertilisers and foodgrains.

For residents, the passenger element could be meaningful if it is delivered alongside the freight capacity. Yet a sanctioned line does not establish when land, construction, safety checks and actual services will be complete. The next useful public milestones are construction progress, commissioning and an operator timetable, rather than assuming an immediate change to local journeys.

The project’s value will ultimately depend on whether it shortens freight paths while giving the two districts reliable passenger options. Its reported cost and traffic estimates provide a benchmark for judging that outcome when the line opens.
