A Different World Returns to Hillman with a New Class on September 24

A Different World returns to the fictional Hillman College in a sequel series scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 24. The new story follows Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she starts her first year under the expectations attached to her parents, Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert.

Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprise those parental roles. The incoming class includes characters played by Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall and Kennedi Reece. Original-series director Debbie Allen is back as an executive producer and directs the first episode; Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer.

The premise offers a useful distinction for viewers familiar with the earlier sitcom. The original characters connect the generations, but Deborah’s experience of forming friendships and finding a voice at college is the new dramatic center. The show is set at a historically Black college, giving campus life and community more than a nostalgic supporting role. Viewers who have not seen the original can enter through Deborah’s freshman story, while returning fans will recognise the family legacy she is trying to navigate.

The sequel has also been promoted through campus events at historically Black colleges and universities, including stops at Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Chicago State, Hampton, Norfolk State, Howard, Spelman and Morehouse. Those events are promotional appearances; they should not be confused with the fictional Hillman campus or with filming locations.

Brandy has recorded a new version of the programme’s opening theme, retaining its familiar lyrics while introducing the new cast. The music is one more bridge to the original, whose theme was performed by Aretha Franklin. As the premiere arrives, the question for the series is whether that continuity helps the new characters stand on their own rather than merely reproducing familiar moments.
