Williams Brings Long-Awaited FW48 Upgrade to Baku

Williams is bringing a substantial upgrade package for its FW48 to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, giving the team an important on-track measure of a difficult 2026 development programme. The Baku race is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, with the unusual weekend beginning on Thursday.

The package arrives after a season in which the car missed the Barcelona shakedown, struggled with weight and has fallen back as rivals continued to improve. Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz have both tempered expectations. Albon has said the changes should be a useful step, while cautioning that the size of rival upgrades means an improvement in Williams’ own car may not translate neatly into a jump in finishing positions. Sainz sees a possible route back toward points but says that is short of the team’s original ambitions.

What Baku can reveal

A street circuit is an exacting place to introduce new parts. Practice time, track evolution and the need for driver confidence can make it difficult to isolate the effect of one aerodynamic change from setup and execution. The useful test is therefore broader than a single qualifying rank: whether both drivers report a more predictable car, whether long-run pace improves, and whether the team can compete with the midfield across the weekend.

Williams scored early points but has not maintained that rhythm. The Baku package was planned months ago, so its projected gain was calculated against a competitive field that has since moved forward. This is why a faster FW48 could still face a hard fight for points.

The team also has to decide how much more of its development capacity belongs to this year’s car as it prepares for 2027. Baku will provide evidence for that decision, but the upgrade should be judged on race pace and subsequent events rather than an immediate promise of a result.
