OneTag Lets FASTag Users Switch Issuers Without Replacing the Tag

FASTag users can now use the OneTag service in the Rajmargyatra mobile app to change their tag issuer while retaining the physical tag already fixed to their vehicle. India’s National Highways Authority announced the app availability on September 17, adding a practical account-switching option to its existing highway services.

The benefit is straightforward: a driver who wants a different issuing bank need not obtain and affix a replacement tag solely for that change. The existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number remains unchanged after a successful transfer. That does not mean the switch happens without checks or that a wallet balance moves automatically to the new issuer.

How the process works

A user signs in to Rajmargyatra and enters the vehicle registration number to check eligibility. The current issuer sends a six-digit mobile verification code. After authorization, the user selects a new issuer and completes its customer verification and wallet onboarding. The previous issuer then closes its FASTag wallet and refunds the remaining balance after applicable adjustments, according to the authority.

The service also has a six-month cooling period before an interoperable FASTag can be ported again. A user considering a switch should therefore compare the new issuer’s terms and ensure the registered mobile number can receive the verification code. The announcement does not establish that every tag or applicant will be eligible; the in-app eligibility check is part of the process.

Rajmargyatra already carries highway services including annual and local FASTag passes and the 1033 emergency helpline. OneTag adds a way to separate a reusable physical tag from the bank relationship behind it. If the process works as described, it can spare drivers the inconvenience of replacing a working tag and reduce repeat issuance.

The important practical test will be whether users can complete verification and receive any remaining wallet refund smoothly. For now, the authority has confirmed availability and described the steps, while individual outcomes depend on eligibility and issuer processing.
