Some coastal areas faced gusts of up to 50 to 60 mph, while the Boston forecast called for periods of heavy rain and gusts approaching 47 mph.

Coastal flood warnings and a high-surf advisory were also in effect for vulnerable shoreline communities. Although Gillette Stadium is inland, the broader conditions created concerns for people traveling to and from Foxborough, as well as for crews working around a large outdoor stadium production.

Sheeran’s next listed performance is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The itinerary then continues with dates in Indianapolis, Charlotte, Arlington, Hollywood and Tampa.

For New England fans, however, the cancellations mean there is currently no local replacement performance on the calendar. Those who still hope to see the tour would need to wait for a new regional announcement or consider another city, while accounting for the added cost and uncertainty of travel.

The decision also disrupted weekend plans for fans who had arranged transportation, accommodation and gatherings around the two stadium concerts. While disappointing, calling off both performances avoided bringing a large crowd into the region during a period of potentially dangerous winds, heavy rain and difficult travel.
