Taylor Swift Sets VMA Record as Madonna Leads 2026 Awards With Seven Wins
Taylor Swift became the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history at the 2026 ceremony, receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors before winning Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.” She ended the night with 33 career VMAs. Madonna collected seven awards, more than anyone else this year, including Artist of the Year.
The ceremony took place Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Snoop Dogg hosting. Its results and performances remained a focus of attention on September 28.
Swift’s record and a dedication
Swift entered the show tied with Beyoncé at 30 career VMAs. The new Artist Director Honors award gave her sole possession of the record. The honor recognizes musicians whose work as directors has helped shape music-video storytelling, making it a particularly fitting milestone for an artist who has increasingly directed her own visuals.
Her Video of the Year win for “The Fate of Ophelia” added another trophy, and Best Direction for “Opalite” brought her career total to 33. Accepting the night’s top prize, Swift dedicated it to the late Dolly Parton, connecting her own “The Life of a Showgirl” era with an artist whose songs and performances influenced generations. Swift also premiered her self-directed video for “Patient Zero” during the broadcast.
Madonna’s seven-award night
Madonna opened the show with Sabrina Carpenter on “Bring Your Love,” then welcomed Charli XCX for a performance built around “Danceteria.” It was Madonna’s first VMA performance in 23 years, and it set up a night in which she was repeatedly called back to accept awards.
Alongside Artist of the Year, Madonna and Carpenter won Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love.” Madonna’s “Confessions II – The Film” won Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography and Best Long Form Video, while Confessions II took Best Album. Together, those victories accounted for her seven wins.
Performances and special honors
The show ranged from new pop to country, rap and tributes. Kacey Musgraves performed “I Will Always Love You” in remembrance of Parton. A separate segment honored George Michael. LISA performed “Sawadika” after winning Best Pop for “Dream,” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, while Best New Artist winner Sienna Spiro sang “Great Expectation.”
RAYE delivered a medley, Bruno Mars performed “Dance With Me,” and Shaboozey was joined by Gunna for “High Noon.” GENER8ION and Yung Lean closed the performances with “STORM.” Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, another of the ceremony’s special honors.
Where the other awards went
BTS had a strong showing beyond the televised presentations: “Swim” won both Song of the Year and Best K-Pop, and the act was named Best Group. Cardi B and Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for “Safe,” while Bruno Mars took Best R&B for “I Just Might.” Olivia Rodrigo’s “the cure” won Best Alternative, Bad Bunny’s “NUEVAYoL” won Best Latin, and Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” took Best Country.
The craft awards recognized several distinct approaches to music video. PinkPantheress won Best Art Direction for “Stateside + Zara Larsson,” and Sabrina Carpenter’s “House Tour” won Best Editing. Ariana Grande’s “hate that i made you love me” received Best Visual Effects and the Song of Summer award.
Swift’s record supplied the night’s defining milestone, but it was not a one-artist sweep. Madonna’s seven wins, BTS’s three awards, a new-artist breakthrough for Spiro and performances spanning multiple generations gave the 2026 VMAs a wider story than its record-setting moment alone.
