Ancy Sojan and Sarvesh Kushare lead India’s September 27 Asian Games athletics results
India’s athletes won five medals across the jumps, combined events and track at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Ancy Sojan came within two centimetres of women’s long-jump gold, and Sarvesh Kushare lost the men’s high-jump title on countback. The last round also changed the contest for bronze. India’s Shaili Singh had been in third place, but China’s Tan Mengyi jumped 6.46m on her final attempt to move ahead. Singh finished fourth with a best of 6.42m. India therefore left the long-jump final with one medal despite having two athletes close to the podium late in the competition.
Kushare shares the height, but not the gold
Kushare cleared 2.25m in the men’s high jump, the same height as gold medallist Fu Chao-hsuan of Chinese Taipei. Countback separated them, placing Kushare second. South Korea’s Woo Sang-hyeok took bronze with 2.22m.
Unlike the long jump, where the winning distance was greater than Sojan’s, the high-jump result turned on attempts made during the competition. Kushare’s clearance was enough for silver, giving India another jumping medal from Sunday’s finals without a higher bar being cleared by the winner.
Shankar completes the decathlon in third
Shankar entered the second day of the men’s decathlon as the overnight leader. He won the concluding 1,500m, but his total of 7,934 points placed him third after all 10 disciplines. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points, and China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012.
The bronze follows Shankar’s decathlon silver at the 2023 Asian Games. His September 27 score was higher than his Hangzhou total, but it was not a new Indian record: he had already scored 7,947 points in March 2026. The distinction matters in a roundup where a stronger performance than at the previous Games did not mean either a higher placing or a record.
Chaudhary improves her national mark
Parul Chaudhary finished third in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase in 9:08.67, improving on her previous Indian record of 9:12.46. Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won in 9:04.36, ahead of Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto in 9:06.82.
Chaudhary had won silver in the steeplechase at Hangzhou in 2023. This time she took bronze, but ran faster than her previous national best. Her result was one of Sunday’s clearer examples of a medal performance carrying a separate record achievement.
Bhadra adds a sprint medal
Harita Bhadra claimed bronze in the women’s 200m, finishing in 23.20 seconds. China’s Chen Yujie took silver in 22.93, while Bhadra held third place in a close finish ahead of Japan’s Abigeirufuka Ido, who clocked 23.21.
Together, Sunday’s results gave India two athletics silvers and three bronzes. The medals came through different kinds of margins: two centimetres in the long jump, countback in the high jump and one-hundredth of a second at the edge of the women’s 200m podium. They also underline why September 27 is best read event by event: Shankar completed a two-day contest, Chaudhary set a national mark, and each medal was decided in a final held that Sunday.
