India at Asian Games 2026: Five new medals confirmed on October 1
India won five medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Thursday, October 1, 2026: silvers in Greco-Roman wrestling and men’s skiff sailing, plus bronzes in men’s compound archery and both squash team events. Nitesh Siwach and sailors Prince Kurisinkal Noble and Manu Francis were the silver medallists. Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru took the archery bronze. By Thursday evening in India, the contingent stood eighth with 65 medals: 10 gold, 23 silver and 32 bronze.
Siwach takes wrestling silver
Siwach reached the men’s 97kg Greco-Roman final before losing 4-0 to Japan’s Yuri Nakazato. The silver was India’s second wrestling medal of these Games, following Sunil Kumar’s bronze in the 87kg division on September 30. Mansi Ahlawat also reached a medal bout on October 1 but lost the women’s 62kg bronze contest to Mongolia’s Altjin Togtokh; her result did not add to India’s tally.
Sailors earn India’s first medal in the sport at these Games
Prince Kurisinkal Noble and Manu Francis finished second in the men’s skiff competition, behind China and ahead of Hong Kong, China. The Indian pair won one of their nine races and placed second in three others on their way to silver. It was India’s first sailing medal of the 2026 Games.
The result belongs to the men’s event. Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma also competed in women’s skiff, but they were not among that event’s medallists. Japan took gold, Hong Kong, China won silver and another crew took bronze.
Archery and squash add three bronzes
Thirumuru beat Vietnam’s Cong Duc Dang 149-144 in the men’s individual compound archery bronze-medal match on October 1. He had lost to South Korea’s Kim Jongho in the semifinal. The bronze was a second medal for Thirumuru at Aichi-Nagoya: he was part of India’s gold-winning men’s compound team on September 30. That team gold is not a new October 1 result.
India’s women’s squash team secured bronze after a 2-1 semifinal defeat to Hong Kong, China. Anahat Singh lost the opening match in five games despite holding four match points. Tanvi Khanna won her match to level the tie, before Joshana Chinappa lost the decider. Shameena Riaz was also part of the Indian squad.
The men’s squash team likewise finished with bronze after a 2-1 semifinal loss to Malaysia. Abhay Singh lost the first match, Veer Chotrani brought India level and Velavan Senthilkumar lost the deciding contest. Suraj Chand was the fourth member of the squad. Neither squash team advanced to a gold-medal match.
Cricket and hockey finals are still to come
India’s men reached two further gold-medal matches on October 1, but those medals should not be confused with Thursday’s five completed podium results. In cricket, India made 169 for seven against Sri Lanka, with Ishan Kishan unbeaten on 80 from 46 balls, then bowled Sri Lanka out for 45. The 124-run semifinal win sets up a final against Pakistan on October 3.
In men’s hockey, India beat Pakistan 4-3 in its semifinal. India led 3-0, was pulled back to 3-3 and won through a late goal from Abhishek. The hockey gold-medal match is scheduled for October 3. Both teams are assured of reaching a final; whether they win gold or silver remains undecided.
Thursday’s confirmed additions are therefore two silver medals and three bronze medals. The cricket and hockey victories explain why India has more medal opportunities ahead, not why its completed medal count rose on October 1.
