Is Coaching Allowed During Tennis Matches? What the Rules Permit

Coaching can be allowed during tennis matches, but the event’s rules decide what is permitted. The 2026 Rules of Tennis allow the sanctioning body to permit off-court coaching. They do not allow coaching during the playing of a point. A coach speaking between points is therefore different from calling instructions during a rally.

Start with the competition’s rules

A professional broadcast, a team competition and a local league can operate under different permitted arrangements. Seeing coaching on television does not automatically authorize it in your own match.

Check the event guidance or ask the referee before play. The important question is whether that competition permits coaching and under what conditions.

Off-court does not mean unrestricted

Where permitted, coaching may happen between points, at changes of ends and during set breaks. Between-point communication must be brief and discreet.

The rules distinguish verbal communication when coach and player are at the same end from hand signals at permitted times. That does not give the coach an open invitation to interrupt the opponent or delay play.

The rally is still the player’s job

Advice during the playing of a point is prohibited under the Rules of Tennis. The boundary matters even if the instruction is short or shouted from a seat.

A tactical comment after the point has ended and the same comment while a player is preparing to strike a live ball are different situations. Timing changes the rule question.

An on-court captain is a separate arrangement

Team events can allow an on-court captain to coach at permitted times. This is not the same as a coach walking onto the court in every individual competition.

Before judging a broadcast incident, identify the event type and the applicable rule. Camera footage showing a conversation does not by itself establish a violation.

Use clear boundaries at club level

For a recreational competition, agree on where a permitted coach may sit and when communication is allowed. If coaching is not permitted, supportive spectators should avoid tactical instructions.

Players benefit from knowing the boundary in advance. It keeps attention on the next point and gives officials a clear basis for handling a complaint instead of relying on assumptions about rules from another tournament.

Quick check

  • Check the competition’s coaching policy.
  • Distinguish between-point advice from a live rally.
  • Ask the referee about unclear limits before play.
