Two East Delhi Pedestrian Bridges Move to Construction Stage

Foundation stones have been laid for two foot overbridges along the Delhi–Saharanpur–Dehradun Expressway corridor in East Delhi, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced on 23 September 2026. The locations are Geeta Colony/Gandhi Nagar at kilometre 5+100 and Ramesh Park, Laxmi Nagar, at kilometre 2+800 on NH-709B. A third bridge near Bhajanpura, Garhi Mendu, at kilometre 10+800 has been approved, the ministry says.

These are three different project statuses: foundation stones for two sites and approval for another. None of those words means a bridge is ready for pedestrians today. Residents should continue to use existing safe crossings and follow local traffic arrangements while work proceeds.

The case for pedestrian facilities on a high-capacity corridor is straightforward. A fast road can reduce travel time for vehicles yet create difficult crossings for neighbourhoods on either side. The value of each new bridge will depend on whether its approaches connect to the places people need to reach, whether access works for people with limited mobility, and whether lighting and maintenance make it usable after opening. The announcement does not provide completion dates or detailed access specifications.

The two sites span distinct East Delhi neighbourhoods. Local residents may want to watch for notices on construction phasing, temporary changes to walking routes and the eventual opening date. The approved Bhajanpura site will need its own implementation update before it can be treated as work under way.

For now, the verified development is a project milestone, not an achieved safety outcome. Once the bridges open, observed use and accessible approaches will offer a more meaningful measure than the number of structures announced.
