India Women Beat China 1-0 for Asian Games Hockey Gold and LA 2028 Berth
India’s women’s hockey team beat defending champions China 1-0 in the Asian Games final in Kakamigahara, Japan, on October 2, 2026. Lalremsiami scored in the 10th minute, and goalkeeper Savita protected the lead with a penalty-stroke save. The gold medal secured India a direct berth in the women’s hockey tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics; the team does not need to qualify through a later Olympic tournament.
How India won the final
China had more of the ball early, but India created an opening in the fourth minute when Baljeet Kaur and Ishika combined to reach the circle. A defender stopped that move before India could shoot. Baljeet then received a green card in the eighth minute, leaving India temporarily a player short. Even so, India took the lead two minutes later.
Captain Salima Tete drove the attack and linked up with Sakshi Rana inside the circle. Sakshi passed to Lalremsiami, who struck a reverse-stick shot from a difficult angle into the goal. It was the forward’s 200th senior international appearance, and her first-quarter finish proved to be the only goal of the match.
India had a chance to extend the lead soon afterward, but Navneet Kaur’s penalty-corner attempt went wide. China kept pressing. In the second quarter, Navneet cleared an effort near the goal line after a Chinese penalty corner. Savita then faced a penalty stroke and dived to her left to save it, keeping India ahead 1-0 at halftime.
China continued to win entries into India’s circle after the break. A pivotal decision came in the 33rd minute, when China were initially awarded another penalty stroke. India requested a video review, and the decision was changed to a penalty corner. Salima blocked the resulting attempt. China pushed forward in the final quarter, but India’s defence held out until the final whistle.
What the gold medal means for LA 2028
The Asian Games serve as Asia’s continental qualification route for Olympic hockey. By winning the women’s competition, India claimed the continent’s direct place at Los Angeles 2028. This is qualification for India’s women’s team, not a statement about the men’s team or India’s place in other Olympic sports. It also means the women do not have to rely on one of the Olympic qualification tournaments scheduled closer to the Games.
China took silver, while host nation Japan won bronze. Those teams remain on the Olympic qualification pathway rather than receiving the direct berth India earned as champion. India’s place was secured by the result of the final, not merely by reaching it.
The title is India’s second Asian Games gold in women’s hockey and its first since 1982, ending a 44-year wait. It also marks a return to the Olympics after the women’s team missed the Paris 2024 Games. India reached this final with a 2-0 semifinal win over Korea, but the narrow victory over China demanded a different kind of performance: an early finish from Lalremsiami, a decisive save from Savita and sustained defending under pressure.
