Can You Book an Indian Railways Ticket After Chart Preparation? How Current Booking Works
Yes, you can book an Indian Railways ticket after chart preparation if a seat or berth is still available for your journey. The facility is called current booking. It opens after the first reservation chart is prepared and remains available only within the railway’s booking window, generally until the second chart is prepared. It is a chance to buy a confirmed reservation, not a way to join a new waiting list.
How to book after the first chart
- Search for your train again. Open the IRCTC website or Rail Connect app and enter your travel date, boarding station, destination and preferred class. Check the availability shown for that exact journey rather than relying on a search made before charting.
- Look for an available seat. If the booking system offers accommodation for your chosen train and segment, enter the passenger details and proceed to payment. IRCTC permits only confirmed e-tickets under current booking; it does not issue a fresh waitlisted e-ticket through this facility.
- Complete the transaction before the window closes. A seat shown during a search is not yours until the booking succeeds. Check that you receive a confirmed ticket and PNR, and carry an accepted original identity document for the journey.
Passengers may also enquire at a computerized railway reservation counter about seats left after the first chart. Counter booking depends on the counter being open and the reservation system still accepting bookings for that train. The same vacant seat cannot be assumed to remain available while a passenger travels to the station or waits in a queue.
When does the booking window close?
The key deadline is preparation of the second reservation chart, not simply the train’s departure time. Indian Railways prepares the first chart in advance, then uses the intervening period to sell eligible vacant accommodation. The second chart incorporates bookings and other changes made after the first. Chart-preparation schedules have changed, so an older rule of thumb about the first chart being made four hours before departure should not be treated as a reliable booking start time for every train.
Likewise, do not count on being able to make an online reservation until the last few minutes before departure. Check the live booking option for your train and act before its displayed cutoff. A delayed train does not, by itself, guarantee that current booking will stay open longer.
How to check vacant seats and berths
IRCTC has a separate Charts/Vacancy feature on its website. Enter the train number, journey date and boarding station to view vacancies by class and coach after charting. Selecting a coach can show a berth-level layout, including whether accommodation is vacant for the full journey or occupied for part of it. In the Rail Connect app, look for Chart Vacancy in the Train section.
The chart view is useful for understanding where space may exist, but it is not a ticket and does not reserve a particular berth. A berth that looks empty for one stretch may be assigned to someone joining later. To travel with a reservation, complete a successful booking for your own boarding and destination stations; the bookable inventory shown during checkout is the decisive check.
What conditions should passengers know?
Current booking is limited by the seats actually available in the relevant class and over the requested stretch. There is no fixed number of post-chart seats set aside for every train. If no suitable accommodation remains, the system will not create a confirmed ticket simply because charting has finished.
IRCTC’s current-booking rules do not permit changes to the boarding point or to the passenger’s name, age or gender on a current-booking PNR. Check those details carefully before paying. The facility is available to ordinary users and authorised agents, but only confirmed e-tickets are issued through IRCTC current booking. Applicable concessions and fares may differ from those for an earlier booking.
If you already hold a ticket, check its updated PNR status after charting rather than assuming a waiting-list position has become a berth. A fully waitlisted e-ticket that remains fully waitlisted after chart preparation is not authority to board a reserved coach. Once the online booking window has closed, a visible vacancy still does not entitle someone to occupy it: any onboard allotment is subject to the ticket-checking staff’s rules and the claims of eligible passengers.
