UPI Circle Full vs Partial Delegation: Which Setup Fits Your Family?
UPI Circle lets a primary user authorise a trusted secondary user to make payments from the primary user’s account. Partial delegation keeps an approval step with the primary user. Full delegation lets the secondary user complete eligible payments within the permissions set. It is a way to share payment access without sharing your UPI PIN.
Whose money pays for the purchase?
The payment comes from the primary user’s account. The secondary user can have a bank account of their own, but one is not required for this delegated arrangement. Adding someone to a circle does not transfer ownership of your account.
Think of a parent buying groceries through an adult family member. The person at the shop handles the purchase while the agreed payment arrangement determines who funds it. That is different from sending an allowance into a separate account.
Full delegation trades approvals for a spending boundary
BHIM supports full delegation with a monthly limit set by the primary user, up to ₹15,000, and a chosen expiry period. The maximum is a ceiling, not an amount every household should allow. Read the permissions shown in your own app before confirming.
Partial delegation suits occasional errands where you want to inspect each request. Full delegation can suit repeated small purchases when waiting for an approval would defeat the purpose. App and bank support determine which options you actually see.
Agree on the rules before linking
Set a limit around the task rather than around the highest amount available. A grocery arrangement could have a smaller budget and a short initial expiry. Discuss what happens if a transaction fails or an unexpected payment appears.
- Check the linked person’s identity together.
- Agree which purchases are allowed.
- Review transaction notifications and the remaining allowance.
- Learn where to change or revoke delegation.
Start with one ordinary payment
Try a small planned purchase while both users are available. Confirm the merchant name, the account charged and the transaction status on both sides. This is a better test than assuming linking alone proves everything works.
Keep account recovery and PINs private. A delegated user needs the permissions supplied by the feature, not your credentials. If an unfamiliar person asks to join your circle to issue a refund or release a prize, stop and verify the claim separately.
